An individual on MediCal only (not SSI) may have the following:
- $1500, designated and revocable
- Unlimited amount of funds, undesignated and irrevocable
- Unlimited amount of funds for burial space items

Supplemental Security Income (SSI) Requirements
According to Federal laws, an individual on SSI or SSI/Medical may have the following:
- Up to $1500 in burial funds, and
- Unlimited burial space items
Irrevocable trusts
State law permits SSI recipients, residing in California, to have up to $1800 placed in an irrevocable trust for funeral, cremation or interment expenses. Burial space items must be ‘held’ for an individual. This means that the person has title to and/or possesses a burial space intended for his use, or has a contract with a funeral home for specified burial space items. All items, meeting these criteria and regardless of value are exempt.
